As we are getting more and more accustomed to AI art generators, another one has been released that is powered by Stable Diffusion, DeviantArt DreamUp.
On Friday, DeviantArt, the online art community, launched DreamUp, an AI-based text-to-image producing service powered by Stable Diffusion. Simultaneously, DeviantArt unveiled an initiative that, while theoretically allowed artists to opt out of AI image training, also made everyone’s art opt-in by default, irritating many of the community’s members.
DreamUp creates one-of-a-kind AI-generated art using word prompts. DreamUp learned how to create images by examining hundreds and thousands of images taken from sites like DeviantArt and gathered into LAION databases without the artists’ permission, which some DeviantArt users may find distressing.
What is DeviantArt DreamUp?
DeviantArt DreamUp is a prompt-driven image-generation program that lets you make practically anything you can think of! DeviantArt DreamUp enables you to create AI art with the assurance that creators and their work will be treated properly. Conversations with deviants have shown myriad innovative methods in which artists are adding AI art into their workflow, whether producing an idea for inspiration, making rough concept art before investing hours into a finished piece, or generating backdrops and textures.
How does DeviantArt DreamUp work?
DreamUp employs Stable Diffusion, a third-party AI model trained on photo datasets gathered from the internet by LAION. The updated DeviantArt Terms of Service apply to all users of the LAION datasets, including any additional Stable Diffusion or derivative model training.
How to use DeviantArt DreamUp?
- Enter a prompt in DeviantArt DreamUp, offering as much detail as possible about the subject, style, colors, and backdrop.
- To make your concept a reality, click “Create.” By default, all DreamUp shots are instantly upscaled to the highest quality, and all DreamUp images are automatically saved to Sta.sh for rapid reference.
- You may re-run a picture with the same query to get a variation, or you can adjust the first prompt to proceed in a new direction.
- Choose “Submit as a Deviation” from your favorites’ three-dot menu.
Your deviation will be classified as artificial intelligence and developed by DeviantArt DreamUp. Your prompt will also appear on the deviation page.
AI opt-out feature in DeviantArt DreamUp
Some creative groups have taken strong positions against AI-generated images, often outright outlawing them. DeviantArt is seeking to pacify artists who are upset that their work is being used to teach AI picture creators, maybe anticipating a backlash. Artists can opt-out of third-party image datasets by using the “NOAI” checkbox in their image settings. (It remains to be seen whether third-party image scrapers will respect this flag.)
In addition, DeviantArt will let artists opt out of having their photographs trained DreamUp in the future, but each artist must first fill out a form that requires human scrutiny. This limitation has prompted outrage among DeviantArt members, with some threatening to delete all of their work and terminate their accounts. DeviantArt stated that:
“Artists should be able to tell third party AI datasets whether or not their content can be used. All deviations are automatically labeled as not authorized for use in AI datasets. While DreamUp is based on third-party technologies (like Stable Diffusion) which have trained their models with the open web, DeviantArt does NOT and WILL NOT add images submitted on DeviantArt to these training sets, on or off the platform.”
DeviantArt’s DreamUp information page is similarly guarded, alleging that DeviantArt does not permit third-party AI image models (such as Stable Diffusion) to scrape their site in order for their models to function. Further down the page, the site aims to address common misconceptions about how AI picture synthesis works.

What is DreamUp Llama Challenge and how to participate in it?
To celebrate the launch of DeviantArt DreamUp and advertise the results it creates, DeviantArt has started a pseudo-challenge for users to enjoy. If you create an image of a llama using this new AI and submit it with the hashtag #DreamUpLlamas, you will be awarded a badge. On their site, DeviantArt says:
“Enter any prompt you can imagine with a llama as the subject to see what the artificial intelligence dreams up for you. Then submit with #DreamUpLlamas to earn a Dream Llama badge!”
